In 1775, John Wesley, the father of Methodism, introduced a covenant service as an important part of spiritual life in the Methodist Societies. This renewal service was a time for the Methodists to gather annually in a time of self-examination, reflection and dedication, wholly giving up themselves and renewing their covenant with God. Repentance through confession and commitment was a key focus of the service, demanding humility from those willing to submit themselves to the dynamic words stated within the liturgy. Today's adaptation of the service is a ceremony of commitment to ongoing discipleship and Christ-like character.
Our worship service times have changed temporarily due to our continued season dealing with COVID-19. Traditional worship is held at 9 a.m. in the Sanctuary, and our Founders Hall service is at 10:30 a.m.
Children's Time is held at 10 a.m. in the Youth Chapel. Our nursery is offered for children aged Pre-K and younger, and reservations are required. RSVP here to save a spot.
We are currently NOT having Sunday School at this time.
If you choose not to attend yet for any reason, please know that we will continue to offer online worship via our Facebook page at 10:30 a.m.
We are also offering a parking lot communion service every Sunday evening at 4 p.m. This is a perfect worship opportunity if you have health issues that would keep you from attending worship inside our building.
Much thought has been given on this temporary schedule. It won't be perfect for everyone; however, we think this gives us the best chance to worship safely for the good of the entire congregation. We appreciate your patience as we move forward.
Welcome to Parkway Heights United Methodist Church in Hattiesburg, Mississippi!
Everything we do at Parkway Heights centers around three ideas that define who we are. Our mission:
1. to INVITE people to worship God and CONNECT them with one another and with Christ;
2. to EQUIP and prepare people for life;
3. to SEND people into a life of mission and ministry God has prepared for them.
Parkway Heights United Methodist Church was formed in 1949 as a church locating away from the city’s hub to its far western edge. Some 60 plus years later the city’s “edge” has moved considerably farther west, though the area surrounding the church and the church itself continues to thrive. (We are one block from the University of Southern Mississippi.)
Early on, Parkway Heights was involved in local, national and international missions. In the 1970's, the congregation adopted a Vietnamese family immigrating to the United States, started a mentoring program for school children in the Edwards Street area of Hattiesburg and began a tradition of supporting missions around the world. Throughout the years we have grown into a congregation with a unique calling for mission and outreach.
Today you'll find the people of Parkway Heights engaging others in many ways - through our Woodley Elementary School Partnership, delivering Meals on Wheels to our neighbors or going on mission trips. There's no shortage of opportunities to share God's love through helping others in large or small ways.
From our young children to our senior adults, all ages are involved in our mission to "invite, connect, equip and send faithful disciples of Jesus Christ." As a congregation, we continue to grow and evolve, while offering a place where people can discover and live their new lives in Christ. Come and see what we're about first-hand. We'll be truly glad to have you!
